Epinephrine Products for Anaphylaxis

Epinephrine Products for Anaphylaxis

July 12th, 2019 | AllergyPharmacy Pearls

This edition of Pharmacy Pearls reviews the available epinephrine injector options for the treatment of anaphylaxis. There are several devices available (both brand and generic), and the cost to patients can vary greatly. In addition to information regarding differences in the devices and an update on the nationwide shortage of brand EpiPen, the take away messages from this Pharmacy Pearl are:
1. Consider writing prescriptions for “epinephrine auto-injector” as this should allow the pharmacist to dispense whichever product is covered and/or least expensive for the patient
2. Avoid the use of Auvi-Q as it is significantly more expensive, less well-covered by insurances, and has no clinical benefit over generic epinephrine auto-injectors
