If you missed the latest Pharmacy Pearl, Erica Dobson, PharmD, shared AHP’s best practices for managing migraines on an outpatient basis. The guidelines are intended to help provide primary care physicians in:

• Early recognition and clinical diagnosis of migraine
• Management of medication overuse headache prior to initiation of other migraine therapies
• Optimizing the use of nonpharmacological interventions to improve acute and prevent migraines
• Selection of initial abortive treatment agents based on efficacy, safety, patient preference and cost of therapy
• Selection of initial preventative treatment agents for episodic migraine based on efficacy, comorbidities, affordability and patient preference
• Identifying patients who may benefit from Neurology referral
