Pharmacy Pearls: Amoxicillin and Liquid Acetaminophen & Ibuprofen Shortages

Pharmacy Pearls: Amoxicillin and Liquid Acetaminophen & Ibuprofen Shortages

November 21st, 2022 | Pharmacy PearlsAdditional Topics
In response to several inquiries regarding the limited availability of liquid amoxicillin, the AHP/URMC Pharmacy team is providing the guidance below to our network’s pediatric and family medicine providers. The Pharmacy Pearl embedded below provides an overview of available alternatives, dosage recommendations, and alternative regimens to treat the most common indications for which amoxicillin suspension is typically prescribed. The amoxicillin suspension supply situation is dynamic and unstable with the supply instability projected to continue for the next couple of months.

We would also note that shortages have been reported for liquid acetaminophen and ibuprofen, particularly the generic brands covered under Medicaid plans. The supply is intermittently available at major retailers like Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc. Children’s acetaminophen suppositories are also falling into intermittent availability. As additional information becomes available, we’ll be sure to share it.

As always, we welcome any questions or feedback you may have. Just email the Pharmacy Team.
