ROC Breathes Easy Asthma Initiative – Community Guidance

AHP, GRIPA, UR Medicine Department of Pediatrics and Golisano Children’s Hospital, RRH, Trillium, Wegmans Pharmacy, Excellus, MVP and St. John Fisher School of Pharmacy have collaborated to bring forward evidence-based guidelines in a paradigm shift in Asthma assessment and treatment for the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions. In this community guidance document, we bring forward simplified treatment and assessment guidance for asthma in pediatric and adolescent patients.  A practical approach based on the most recent GINA guidelines, this guidance is designed to promote alignment in care delivery that will help our patients 6 years and older better manage their asthma.

Using a single combination inhaler consisting of an anti-inflammatory inhaled corticosteroid and a reliever medication should be considered first-line therapy for both rescue and prevention.  Asthma treatment has shifted away from short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) reliever monotherapy (albuterol by itself) because it does not address underlying airway inflammation.  SABA only therapy should be avoided for the majority of patients with asthma.
