Updated 1/10/2022: Return to Exercise Protocol Ages 5+

January 10th, 2022 | NewsCOVID Return to SchoolCOVID-19Covid Pediatrics

Please note: there are no actual revisions to the guidance from December—these are all just clarifications because many schools are requesting assessment and clearance for all kids and for all activities and also a five-day assessment (at end of quarantine). We have made some minor changes to the language in the algorithm (below) only to further highlight the already established smaller group of children/youth who require this assessment AND that to clarify that the healthcare assessment should still be at 10 days, not at 5 days—at least until there are new recommendations from the AAP.

The algorithm below highlights the following:

  1. The REVISED Pediatric Return to Exercise after COVID-19 Infection Guidance released in December is unchanged and applies ONLY to:
    • students who have had moderate/severe presentation with COVID
    • youth 12 years and older participating in high intensity exercise/competitive sports* regardless of symptom severity
    • Please note: *This does NOT apply to gym/physical education or recess unless moderate-severe symptoms
  2. The timing for healthcare evaluation/assessment remains 10 days after diagnosis/start of symptoms and is NOT shortened to 5 days. This is a clinical recommendation, not related to isolation or quarantine guidance
