Psychiatric Consultations Available for Primary Care Providers & Prescribers

October 3rd, 2025 | Behavioral HealthNews

The Behavioral Health (BH) outpatient consultation service at UR Medicine Strong Minds Adult Clinic is here to support primary care and other prescribing providers in the management of medications for adult patients with mental health conditions.

This service offers a valuable partnership—psychiatrists provide expert consultation to help guide treatment, while the referring provider maintains prescribing responsibility.

What You Need to Know

  • Timely Access – Appointments are typically available within 2–4 weeks.
  • Consultative Role – Psychiatrists share recommendations only; they do not prescribe medications or provide ongoing medication management. Referring providers must be willing to continue prescribing.
  • Primary Focus – Providers are encouraged to refer patients with mood disorders, particularly those with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), which is a central focus of this clinic.
  • Exclusions – The service does not provide psychological testing or diagnostic evaluations for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
