Special Considerations for MyChart: Immediate Release and Similar Tools

Special Considerations for MyChart: Immediate Release and Similar Tools

October 31st, 2022 | Network News

In 2021, the 21st Century Cures Act expanded patients’ rights to electronically access their medical history and treatment information leading URMC to implement MyChart: Immediate Release. Through immediate release, most medical notes and test results will be accessible to patients in MyChart as soon as they are finalized by the provider.

Since most information will be released automatically to MyChart, there are special considerations for privacy and sharing in the adolescent population. UR Medicine has adopted guidance for adolescents ages 12-17 and their parents to help them navigate what immediate release means for them, which can be found here. Adolescents who sign up for MyChart can give their parents proxy access at one of three levels: Full proxy access with notes, full proxy access without notes, or limited proxy access – immunizations and allergies only.

While this guidance is specific to URMC’s use of MyChart, information in the documents can assist private practices that utilize other patient portals with adopting best practices and educating their patients and families on the use of electronic medical records. AHP’s Medent User Group, which will serve as a peer-to-peer group allowing users to share best practices and learn from other Medent users across the network, will also consider this item in their work to assist practices further. The Medent User Group was discussed at the September PCP Advisory Meeting, and you can view the slides here.
