Pharmacy Pearls: Comparison of Oral Antivirals for Influenza

According to the CDC, Influenza B/Victoria viruses are predominant nationally, which is unusual for this time of year. H1N1 viruses are the next most common. H3N2 and B/Yamagata viruses are circulating at very low levels. In NYS, influenza is currently categorized as widespread with similar frequency patterns of viral types and subtypes. Influenza appears to be peaking early in NYS with 11,051 confirmed cases of influenza reported thus far compared to just 3,858 confirmed case at this time last year. This month’s pharmacy pearl offers a comparison of oral antivirals for influenza treatment in the outpatient setting along with an update on the expanded indication for baloxavir (Xofluza®).
