AHP’s First Decade: Size and Reach
April 28th, 2023 | NewsAs reported in a recent issue of Network News, 2023 is AHP’s ten-year anniversary, and we’re marking the occasion by looking back to highlight elements of our network’s growth and development while also sharing our aspirations for what the next ten years will deliver for AHP and our providers. This month, we are shining the spotlight on our growth in the number of network providers and the expansion of our geographic catchment.
AHP was established in 2013 in response to the Affordable Care Act of 2010 when our partners at UR Medicine recognized that the reimbursement environment would be evolving to a value-based model and that in this new environment, the system’s best opportunity for success would be as part of an aligned, clinically integrated network. With just Strong and Highland and around 1,200 URMFG-employed physicians located in Monroe and Livingston counties committed to joining our accountable care network, AHP began operations and focused recruitment efforts on community hospitals and private practice primary care physicians. In 2014, AHP began to add classes of membership for non-physician providers, starting with Certified Nurse Midwives. Now in 2023, AHP not only includes hospitals, physicians, and CNMs, but also podiatrists, primary care PAs and NPs, optometrists, physical therapy clinics, and substance use disorder treatment facilities. Spread across a geographic footprint of 16 New York State counties, the AHP network now includes 11 hospitals and 2,783 individual providers.
But why does our organizational growth matter to you? Because we couldn’t have done it without you!
To achieve our shared goals in population health and quality improvement, we need a robust network of providers with whom we can partner to implement population health strategies that improve the quality of care, community health, and our performance to value-based contracts. Your continued dedication to providing the best care to your patients while lowering the cost of care has allowed us to be successful on our value-based contracts for 10 years straight. Because of your efforts, we’ve been able to add additional resources like care management, pharmacy services, and behavioral health, all to support you! Our success, driven by you, has made AHP a recognizable community partner in value-based care, attracting partners throughout the region.
When AHP was founded under the tagline “Healthcare is changing,” how quickly we would grow and how much success we would have a decade later was unknown. But with your partnership, we’ve legitimized the value of clinically integrated, value-based care in our community. And once again, healthcare is changing as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. 2023 represents a pivotal point in our network’s continued evolution as we look forward to new ways to innovate to improve care and lower costs.
Throughout 2023, we’ll continue to share highlights from our organization’s development and provide glimpses into our next ten years as a successful network. Thank you for continuing on this journey with us!
