MSSNY Wrongful Death Liability Insurance Update

February 27th, 2023 | Network News

In the November/December issue of Network News, we shared that the Wrongful Death Liability Expansion Legislation (Grieving Family Act) was expected to be sent to Governor Hochul for her consideration. The Governor has vetoed the legislation, in large part to advocacy campaigns, and it will not become law. Some groups found that liability insurance premiums for providers could have risen as much as 40% if this bill had been signed into law, which may have reduced the physician workforce by making it financially unsustainable for many physicians to stay in practice. You can view the Medical Society of the State of New York’s (MSSNY) press release detailing the veto on the Monroe County Medical Society’s website. You can also read Governor Hochul’s op-ed in the New York Daily News, sharing why she vetoed the bill and her wishes to continue this critical conversation.
