Updated 4/18/2022: Shelf Life Extension for J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine

April 18th, 2022 | VaccineCOVID-19

On April 7, 2022, the Food & Drug Administration authorized a shelf life extension for the Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine for an additional two months.  The shelf-life of this vaccine has been updated from 9 months to 11 months. This decision is based on data from ongoing stability assessment studies that demonstrate that the vaccine is stable at 11 months when refrigerated at temperatures of 36° – 46° Fahrenheit (2° – 8° Celsius). This shelf-life extension applies to refrigerated vials of J&J COVID-19 vaccine that have been held in accordance with the manufacturer’s storage conditions.

Vaccination providers that have J & J vaccine in storage must:

  1. Check the J & J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine website for the current expiration date Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Expiry Checker
  2. Mark the carton and/or vials with the new expiration date
  3. Update the expiration date in the NYSIIS inventory module
  4. Remember to always recheck the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Expiry Checker on all inventory prior to discarding any vials.
