Wrongful Death Liability Legislation Update
December 5th, 2022 | NewsThe Wrongful Death Liability Expansion Legislation passed by the Legislature earlier this year is expected to be sent to Governor Hochul for her consideration in the next few weeks. In a recent letter, Dr. Parag Mehta, President, Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), encouraged providers to send letters and tweets to Governor Hochul urging her to veto the legislation on the grounds that it may negatively impact patient care. Some groups have found that liability insurance premiums for providers could rise as much as 40% if this bill is signed into law, which may reduce the physician workforce by making it financially unsustainable for many physicians to stay in practice. Providers can visit the advocacy page to send pre-drafted letters and tweets to Governor Hochul.
You can read MSSNY’s opposition memo here, and the bill as it will be sent to Governor Hochul is available here.
