Accountable to EDI is a recurring feature in Network News that highlights opportunities and initiatives related to equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts at AHP, the UR Medicine system, and within the community at large.

April is National Minority Health Month: April is National Minority Health Month (NMHM). First recognized in 2002, NMHM aims to promote educational efforts on the health problems currently facing minorities and other health disparity populations. National Minority Health Month encourages all health organizations and Americans to conduct appropriate programs and activities to promote healthfulness in minority and other health disparity communities. Office of Health Equity Research Strategic Planning Retreat Keynote Address: Dr. David Williams, the creator of the Everyday Discrimination Scale, which is the original and still recommended scale for measuring perceived racism, will deliver the keynote address for the Office of Health Equity Research Strategic Planning Retreat, in honor of National Minority Health Month. Williams is the Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health and Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. An internationally recognized authority on social influences on health, his research has enhanced our understanding of the way in which race, racism, socioeconomic status, stress, health behavior, and religious involvement can affect health. Common Ground Health’s Speak Life! 2023 Health Equity Conference: The African American and Latino Health Coalitions will host the annual conference themed,”¡Acción ahora! / Action now!” which will take place in person at the Strathallan Hotel and online from 8:15 am to 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 27. The event aims to unite, teach, reach, and motivate community members to take action toward healing and moving forward in hope. Speak Life! 2023 brings together a powerhouse slate of speakers to discuss the urgent need for health equity. The conference will focus on Latino health as a lens to look at health equity for all people of color in the Finger Lakes. It will explore how language is a barrier to health care and other social drivers of health and how that impacts equitable health outcomes. The conference promises to be an informative and inspiring event that will bring together community members, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders to address health equity issues and work towards a healthier, more just community. Visit the conference website to learn more about the event and register
